This is Steve. I caught Steve outside of the ladies room, I mean classroom, tonight at American River College where he had just finished teaching his History of Graphic Design class. Who knew there was so much sad history behind fonts? Garamond… the guy died penniless on the streets as did many typographers, apparently. But that will not be Steve’s fate, because he is also a graphic designer and an educator. Steve grew up in the Bay Area, went to San Jose State and has been teaching for about ten years. He has created many fonts, his favorite being Jeanne, named after his wife. He digs music like Bowie, Beck, and the Veronicas. Steve is 43.

Favorite Accomplishments: Depends on the day. It could be designing a cool font, that I didn’t think was going to be cool, or developing a poster for a good cause (such as an Anti-War poster). Sometimes it’s making a dinner where all the ingredients taste just right. But lately, it’s seeing my students going on to do cool stuff.

Regrets: I actually don’t have any. When I think of a ‘regret’ , I eventually realize that it’s not a regret. Oh wait… there was that “Vicki” thing…

What are your passions/obsessions? Design, typography, my wife, my two rescue dogs and Alexa Chung’s shoes.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching? When they get it.

Sound Off! Everyone’s worried about robots taking over, but in reality, we’re going to be consumed by corporations. They exist under their own power. They can survive the loss of their executives and managers and they don’t have to answer. The ones with the ugliest logos are the ones to be really afraid of.

Thanks Steve.
